It’s time for avant garde astrologers to come to the forefront to pave the way in the astrological field in preparation for the upcoming astrological renaissance. Avant garde astrologers can forge ahead to explore new territories, conduct experiments, research, and innovate in the astrology field in order to disrupt and challenge astrology’s current techniques and applications. These explorations can result in the generation and foundational development of new branches on the astrological tree and overall, the astrological discipline’s expansion in both depth and breadth.
What is an Avant Garde Astrologer?
Avant garde is a term that describes a person, work, or idea that is experimental, radical, unorthodox, controversial, and/or unconventional in the context of art, science, culture, and society. Historically, avante garde artists and scientists sparked radical change, revitalized, and stimulated stagnancy in their respective fields.
The avant garde astrologer’s goal is one in the same. From an astrological perspective, they can be compared to the North Node/Rahu or Uranus in the astrology field, where they are ‘breaking the algorithm’, 'shattering the glass ceiling', or 'going against the grain’ for the purpose of the astrology field's advancement.
The avant garde astrologer asks questions such as, in what other contexts can I apply astrology in? How can I show and/or reveal astrology’s value in a new subject? How can we dissolve imaginary boundaries in the field? In what areas can astrology help other disciplines? What areas haven’t been explored through astrology? How can I challenge a common perspective in astrology?
In the astrologers that I’ve come across, their unique ideas and concepts have revealed my own limitations in my astrology knowledge and understanding, and opened my mind to astrology’s possibilities.
We don’t often see astrology from an unexpected perspective or applied in an unexpected way. Nor do we often see common astrological ideologies and rationale challenged through research, experiments, tests, and or sound reasoning.
Who are they and what have they done?
Carl Payne Tobey
The late Carl Payne Tobey is one primary example of an avant garde astrologer. He was a leading pioneer and thought leader in astrology. One of his former students, Naomi Bennett states, “Carl Payne Tobey was a man whose ideas were ahead of his own time, but ripe for understanding at this precipice in space in time.”.
Specifically, Tobey proposed that Aries’ ruler was Pluto, which challenged the current attribution of Mars as Aries’ ruler. He also proposed that there must be two additional planets outside of the orbit of Pluto, which would be assigned to Taurus and Gemini. Aside from these specific examples, overall, his work and studies helped me to see astrology from a mathematical perspective, which helped me to refine my astrological understanding and helped me to dive deeper into what astrology actually is.
Nikola Stojanovic
The late Nikola Stojanovic is another avant garde astrologer. Stojanovic revealed the ‘degree theory’ within the zodiac. This theory attributed meaning to each degree of the 360 degrees within the zodiac. This meaning stemmed from applying the zodiacal pattern to 1-29˚ of each zodiac sign, assigning Aries to 1˚, Taurus to 2˚, Gemini to 3˚, and so on and so forth.
Despite my own criticisms about this theory, it has gained much traction in the astrology field, making Stojanovic a leading astrological pioneer.
Identifying avant garde astrology qualities in the natal chart
Avant garde astrologers can be identified through the birth chart. Interestingly, Tobey and Stojanovic both have Urania, the asteroid that represents astrology and astronomy, placed in Aries. Aries is a zodiac sign whose energy makes Urania new, fresh, independent, primordial, and pioneering.
Additional indicators in the birth chart could involve Urania placed in Aquarius or Pisces, or Neptune, Uranus, and/or the North Node in aspect to Urania.
Conclusion
In conclusion, avant garde astrologers will pave the way forward in the astrology field, disrupting and challenging astrology’s techniques, methods, analysis, and application. The astrologers mentioned here, are only a couple out of many unseen and unfounded examples that are already out there.
Have you come across avant garde astrology? If so, how has it impacted your knowledge, understanding, and astrological perspectives?
